Many retro games of the ’70s ’80s and ’90s did revolutionise the gaming industry, yet it was also the continuation and improvement of games in the ’00s and 10’s that kept eager eyes on gaming. Perhaps the most well-known game of all time, this also maybe because it is the oldest! Released on the Atari in 1972 and revolutionised the 70’s, Pong became the first commercially successful video game and helped to establish the gaming industry to what it is today. The game’s popularity was nothing to be questioned as not only is it a household name, yet the simple table tennis-based retro game has gone to have multiple renditions since the ’70s including, other Pong-inspired games and features in countless amounts of pop culture.
Like Pong, Pac-Man has itself established itself as a household name and one of the all-time great retro games. First released into arcades in 1980, Pac-Man set a premise for how games were going to be now, colourful, fast-paced and with a competitive edge. The game also inspired a sequel called Ms Pacman which was first released in 1982 which set up Pac-Man as a franchise. The franchise is still popular today with it famously getting a big cameo in the movie Pixels. Another name synonymous with revolutionising a decade would be the platformer retro game of Sonic The Hedgehog. The blue mascot was a big hit for SEGA as Sonic quickly became a distinct household name worldwide. Released to the Sega Genesis in 1991, Sonic set the benchmark for retro games at the time, it would then go on to publish games like StarFox, Doom and Mortal Kombat, the last of which we have on our arcade machine.
First released in 2004 by Blizzard onto PC, World of Warcraft or WoW was key to the gaming industry in the early ’00s. It is perhaps one of the few games considered to now be ‘retro’ that is still being played daily and in its 17-year existence has amassed approximately 114,516,858 players! The online role-playing game is a recognised name worldwide with it being passed down through generations.
This game is by no means retro, yet it certainly feels like it! GTA 5 has managed to exist on 3 generations of consoles as well as PC with it first being released in 2013 onto the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. It revolutionised the GTA franchise and the entire gaming industry by becoming the second biggest selling game of all time and is still getting millions of plays each day!
