Many retro games stunned the entire industry with their gameplay and memorable characters. However, many retro games are appreciated because of their in-game graphics, which at the time were ground-breaking and extremely unique. Read below to see the list of these retro games and how their graphics managed to make them stand out from the crowd.
First released to the SNES in the early ’90s, Star Fox surprised its players with anthropomorphic animals as its main character base, which was quite refreshing to players of the time. Around 99% of the joy and hype for the game, however, came from the graphics! This was down to the fact that it was Nintendo’s first 3D polygonal graphics game. It was also one of the very first games to showcase 3D characters in detail.
Another showcase from the SNES, Yoshi’s Island was released to the public in the mid ’90s and immediately received praise for its game-defining graphics. The developers went a bit left-field when making this game, this was because they made the aesthetic look like it had been drawn by hand and had a kind of crayon look to it which made it stand out amongst other retro games at the time, this was also powered by the Super FX2 Microchip!
Now considered to be a retro game, Okami was first released on the PlayStation 2 in the mid-2000s and immediately blew the industry away with the artistic graphics feel of the game, created by the developers. With this artistic style chosen for the retro game, the whole thing looks similar to a water-colour painting and the unique look for the game allowed it to appeal to many players.
This game defined retro game graphics. Released onto the Sega Genesis during the mid ’90s, Vectorman, similar to Star Fox, impressed players with its pre-rendered 3D models used for the background characters which gave the game a distinct look, as players around that time were just getting their first tastes of 3D gaming, and this retro game was one of the finding fathers.
Probably the most famous and notable retro game on this list (which is why it is last!). Donkey Kong Country was another one of the founding fathers of 3D model graphics in video games. Of course, another yet another creation onto the SNES, Nintendo hit it out of the park with this game, as it used 3D pre-rendered models for everything!
